Food

People that have difficulties eating certain types of food, either because of a chronic health condition or because of dietary requirements, as well as persons that face challenges swallowing solid food, will require a specific diet and additional nutrition, such as high energy food. Liquid-based supplements should be available during food distribution. Therefore, during the assessment phase, make sure to consult with women, men and children with disabilities as well as with people who have diabetes or other chronic health problems when planning supplementary feeding programs and additional food rations for adults.

For tips on making your food distribution inclusive and accessible for persons with disabilities, read further in distribution and nutrition cards. In addition, the following tips will help you to make sure that the food purchased and distributed it suitable for all:

  • Consult with people about their food habits and preferences to ensure they are culturally and faith appropriate;
  • Provide field staff with a basic understanding of the needs of persons with specific impairments so that they are capable of addressing and avoiding creating barriers for persons with disabilities to equally access adequate and sufficient food.
