During the disaster and immediately afterwards, the need for medication and health care is always a priority. Stocks and supplies of medicines and medical equipment can quickly run low.

In addition to general emergency medical kits, it is important to include medication for chronic diseases and medical impairments that requires continuous medication. Ensuring access to these medicines is fundamental to avoid the exacerbations of people’s condition and to avoid secondary complications.

While not exhaustive, these are conditions for which medication should be provided but additional needs assessment will further determine the necessary medication:

• Medications for chronic health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney conditions (dialysis), HIV and Aids, mental health conditions, and others;
• Medical equipment such as catheters and basic hygiene kits for people who have incontinence conditions.
